Artists churn out releases in a fight for the song of the summer, while listeners stream things they wouldn’t normally in darker and more dreary times.

Listen to Jenny Lewis' contribution to the soundtrack, and preorder the album on iTunes. He pines for a no-frills relationship (that mostly involves smoking, lying down and laughing), and it's easy to imagine that sentiment finding a parallel in the Girls universe. Miguel is superb as ever, beginning the song subtly before exploring the vast range of his voice in the second half. Describing the song as "grungy" might be a stretch, but this is surely boundary-pushing R&B.

If you sub in '90s R&B for those '90s shows, then Miguel has a similar mission of dirtying up the norm on "Simplethings," taken from the latest Girls soundtrack. As I'm led to believe, the show Girls attempts to add some grit to the "twentysomethings in the big city" narrative that Sex in the City and Friends popularized.
